Pressure Washing vs Soft Washing: Which Does Your Brisbane Home Need?
Pressure washing and soft washing aren't the same thing — and using the wrong one can wreck your render or roof. Here's how to choose, Brisbane edition.
If you’ve searched “pressure washing near me” in Brisbane, you’ve probably seen both pressure washing and soft washing offered — often by the same company. They sound interchangeable. They’re not. Using high pressure on the wrong surface is one of the most common (and expensive) cleaning mistakes we get called out to fix.
Here’s the plain-English difference, and how to know which your home actually needs.
What is pressure washing?
Pressure washing uses a high-pressure jet of water — often 2,000–4,000 PSI — to blast away dirt, grime, moss and stains. That force is perfect for hard, durable surfaces that can take a beating:
- Concrete driveways, paths and patios
- Pavers and retaining walls
- Brick and some hardstand surfaces
It’s fast and satisfying on the right surface. The problem is when that same pressure hits something delicate.
What is soft washing?
Soft washing uses low pressure (about the force of a garden hose) combined with specialised, biodegradable cleaning solutions. The chemistry does the work, not the force. It kills mould, algae, lichen and bacteria at the root — so surfaces stay cleaner for longer — without driving water behind cladding or stripping paint.
Soft washing is the correct method for delicate or porous surfaces:
- Painted render and weatherboard
- Roof tiles and Colorbond roofing
- Eaves, fascias and soffits
- Timber decks and fences
Why it matters (the damage we see)
High pressure on the wrong surface causes real, costly damage:
- Render & paint: high pressure chips paint and forces water behind render, causing bubbling and mould inside the wall.
- Roof tiles: blasting tiles strips the protective glaze and can crack them — turning a clean into a re-roof.
- Timber: pressure furs up timber decking, leaving it rough and splintered.
This is exactly why we assess every surface before we start. Most Brisbane homes need a combination: soft washing for the house, roof and timber; pressure washing for the driveway and paths.
Which does your Brisbane home need?
| Surface | Method |
|---|---|
| House walls (render, weatherboard, brick) | Soft wash |
| Roof (tile or Colorbond) | Soft wash |
| Driveway, paths, patio | Pressure wash |
| Deck & fence | Soft wash |
| Solar panels | Pure-water, low pressure |
Brisbane’s humid, subtropical climate makes mould, lichen and “black streaks” on roofs especially common — and those are a soft-washing job every time. (More on that in our guide to how often you should clean your roof in Brisbane.)
The bottom line
Don’t ask “do you pressure wash?” — ask “will you soft wash my render and roof?” A good operator chooses the method to suit the surface, not the other way around.
At Parer’s, we do both — house & soft washing, roof cleaning and driveway & concrete cleaning — and we’ll tell you exactly which your place needs before we quote. Every job is fully insured ($20M public liability) with proper surface assessment and property protection.
